Pearl Harbor, Hawaii ~ August 22 ~ 28, 1991

Midway was relieved as the Navy's forward-based aircraft carrier by USS Independence, CV-62 in

what was known as The Great Carrier Swap-Out. Midway  continued on to NAS North Island in San

Diego, California, where she was decommissioned in 1992 and towed to Bremerton, Washington.

USS Independence September 03, 1991 Green Sheet

 

For all those scoffing at the rumor that the Navy can take your birthday away... it's true!

After departing Hawaii following the turnover with USS Midway, Indy crossed the International

Dateline on September 3rd, while heading west towards Japan. When this happened, the

date changed to September 5th & skipped the 4th completely. My birthday happens to be

September 4th, which never happened for me that year! What I thought wasn't fair, was the

fact that when we were going to Hawaii aboard Midway, one guy had two birthdays because

the date change works in reverse. So, yes... it's true the Navy can take your birthday away!
