On April 30 ~ May 02, 2004, the Wings Over Gillespie 2004 Air Show was held at Gillespie Field in El Cajon, California. The following is a short description of the air show by Robert Anderson, the contributor of these photos:
"It was a great little air show in
its own right. The city of El Cajon has some fairly strict noise regulations, so
most aircraft that flew could only do low fly by's without breaking the noise
regulations. Total attendance on Saturday (day two of the air show) was about
15,000. Not too bad really. Although this is definitely not on the scale of a
Miramar Air Show where you have 250,000 every day, the Wings Over Gillespie Air
Show was well presented and very well received. The Vertol H-21 Shawnee or
"Banana" helicopter at the air show is the only flyable example still in
existence. It can also be seen online at
www.classicrotors.com or in person at the
Rotorcraft Restoration Facility at the Ramona Airport, straight up Highway 67
from El Cajon. The SDACM (San
Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum) booth was well received and I
would say nine out of every ten passersby took brochures and stopped to briefly
chat about the USS Midway. ADM Mac McLaughlin delivered a short speech to
start the stage show and he was stopped two or three times by applause. I must
say that I thoroughly enjoyed my day there."
