I joined VAQ-136 in the summer of 1977 and detached in June of 1980. I made workups and the '78-'79 Med Cruise in the Saratoga and the transition to the Midway.

I have enjoyed the nostalgia wandering through this site. I'll be back.

Great site. The Gauntlets was my first and only duty station. Squadron and guys were great, not crazy about Japan or the ship. I was hoping to talk to guys that were in the squadron, especially the line shack and AE shop, from 1995-1998.

What a great site! Being a Midway sailor in CAG Five was a special experience for sure. Nothing I experienced during my 25 years in the Navy came close. I was Safety, OPSO then MO under skippers Porritt and Perkins. I'll always remember the close-knit group of squadron mates. I would love to hear from others who served with me.

As a plankowner to VAQ-136 I thought I might share with you some pictures of the first westpac cruise of VAQ-136. I was scavenging thru the closet the other day and I found cruise book of 73-74 on the Kitty Hawk. If anyone is interested, I should be able to help in getting you some pics.

I received orders to VAQ-136 right out of boot camp back in 1982. But unlike the majority of you all I was not a power plant or airframe technician. I was a cook. Yes, VAQ-136 had three cooks in our squadron as well as every other squadron. The reason why was…when the air-wing flew off to Atsugi, their galley need more cooks to compensate for the influx of air-wing people, and I went TAD to Atsugi several times to assist in the galley. When the ship deployed, I went back.

Nice web page...Many great memories come back to me as I navigate your site (Line shack and Airframes from 1987 through 1990). You have done an excellent job building this thing up Troy! I do remember that when you checked in the squadron though that you did everything at 100%, so its no real surprise. Anybody wanna give me a shout just drop me a line.

Always a Gauntlet,
Mark

Cool site. I got my sea legs in the Gauntlets back in '92-95 in the Airframes shop.

I too served in VAQ-136 from April 1990 to May 1993 and crossdecked with them from the Midway to the Independence.

Looking for YN1 Carlson, PN1 Weimar, and PN1 Gittens (Hammer). I know these guys are around, probably at a happy hour somewhere. Prince, awaiting the late 80's/early 90's Gauntlet Reunion info. Keep us posted Bro.

Randy,

At present, there are no plans for a large-scale reunion. However, there have been several smaller Gauntlet get-togethers between a few guys. A couple of these are documented in the Gauntlets Then & Now section. This also reminds me to ask if anyone wants to add their "then & now" photos to this site? If so, please email me your photos and information to post with them.
